I solved all my problems by switching to the firewire connection. The scanner has worked like a dream ever since and I can make sharp 24x30 prints from its 200Mb 35mm scans.
If your computer is not equipped for firewire, add in cards are now cheap. IMHO, forget USB with this scanner.
