You might be better off getting a firewire PCMCIA card. They are about 50 quid...

Still, the cable option might work in this instance as the scanner has a separate power supply, I think that the extra pins supply power on the firewire 6pin version.

Great idea Paul. Next question: As my laptop has only the 4 pin firewire,
will a 6 pin to 4 pin cable do the trick? I assume there would be loss of
data &/or possible power problems. Has anybody tried this with success? I
suspect a pcmcia firewire card is the way to go.
