This problem is not Canons alone !
I really enjoy using My Contax RTS3 but the ttl flash metering is very unpredictable
so I
went the Metz on auto route a long time ago with excellent results in all situations.
Its a simple solution and also worked superbly on my Dimage 7 .
Well worth investigating.
ps have Metz units for sale as I'm using the SB800s with the Kodak camera, they work
every time :-)).
