As I understand it when focusing is achieved with the shutter button (cf
4-0) E-TTL gives most weight to the active focus point, so white wedding
dresses and black suits can cause havoc. The behaviour of the system
seems especially unpredictable when you focus and re-frame before
exposing. FEL, as you observe, takes its reading from the centre spot
metering area.
