I started to find focus increasingly off target - the subject would be soft, while the background was pin sharp.
I think this is a matter that has been brushed under the carpet for too long. I can't think of a single nikon I've owned since the F4 that didn't do this (F90x, F100, D1x, S2pro). I use manual and focus on nose in order to get eyes in focus on long lens portraits.
