Hi Just wondering if anyone has any experience of using www.onspeed.com system of speeding up connections to your isp . This system/programme is for use, where there is a lack of broadband
Hi,
It sounds very interesting and I may try it to see if it works. But the FAQ pages say this about images:
The only items that change are images. The compression algorithms strip out a pre-determined amount of colours and pixels (the components that make up image files) to reduce the size of the image, which in turn, reduces the overall amount of the information being sent.
You have the option to choose how much information you want to strip out by choosing your speed setting. To achieve the fastest speed the compression routines strip out more from the images. However, you will be surprised at how little the quality is impacted. You can choose to receive a little less speed improvement and improve the quality. There are 4 settings of speed / quality. By playing with these settings you should find a level of both speed and quality you can be comfortable with. Please remember you will still see good acceleration at any of the 4 settings and of course if you want you can turn off ONSPEED and see images uncompressed.
IMPORTANT: Unlike web browsing it is not possible to receive E-mail messages at one quality level, change speed / quality settings and then attempt to download the e-mail again. Generally, once an e-mail has been downloaded it cannot be downloaded a second time. Due to this design of standard internet mail applications, no image quality loss occurs on mail being received.
It also says about file types:
However, ONSPEED will not accelerate certain files such as MP3, Mpeg, EXE and streaming video these files will pass through our servers without being accelerated.
Sounds interesting, for general use could be good, but if downloading important images you would have to be careful to turn it off while you do this to avoid any image quality loss. Works on Mac and PC.
Anyone out there using it?
Cheers, David
