I've just bought the same as you, the FW 800 versions, for exactly the same purpose, absolutely wicked fast as well. I'm not too sure about which capacity the Big Disk's change over to using 2 drives, but looking at the specs and reading the tests on Bare Feats ( links for both below ) I'd stick with the 2 FW 800 250gb D2's. All the other's apart from the 500gb Big Disk have only 2 mb buffers, which does slow performance down.
Incidentally Alan, have you tried disconnecting and re-connecting the drives, or one of them for that matter to see if they can operate independently should one of them go belly whilst in storage ? Just curious ( and nervous )
