The most basic settings could be summarised as follows( please note this
works for me and my work, mostly "cats in the Jungle", this is , models,
beauty, nudes etc) and only for digital files, not scans.

For files up to 32 Mb I run Amount: 200-300% ,Radius 0.3-0.40 ,Threshold
2-3 , followed by a Fade USM down to 95% using the Luminosity blending mode.

For files up to 50 Mb I run Amount 400% Radius 0.3-0.4 , Threshold 1, and
on some ocasions less than these setings, depending on the original image,
( usually, photos shot on studio using a tripod do not need all this pre-
sharpenning). In other cases, like when shooting paintings or architecture,
numbers may go even higher than these ones.
Remember to run the Fade Filter command in Luminosity just as well

The fade command works in an equivalent manner as another method suggested
by many sources, in which RGB files are moved to LAB space , and a
sharpenning is applied to the "L" ( luminosity) channel, and then back to
RGB, but IMHO, using the USM pre-sharp in RGB is less cumbersome, is easily
set as an action( and then you can run it with an F-key stroke or in
automated batches). Of course, if you want to perform some further
adjustments in LAB, then the choice is obvious.

Again , maybe these settings require some testing depending on subject
matter. and shooting conditions. Final Sharpenning settings ( if you take
care of this step) go exactly in opposite drection, this is, a small Amount,
a high Radius and some Threshold.

There are some utilities that offer this sort of settings, in packaged form,
so if you are a friend of automation, perhaps you should try PixelGenius and
other apps already discussed in this list.
