Just a thought here but are the oringal cards  that take a long time old
ones and are the 40 x cards type II cards?

Mike - this sounds horribly long. I happened to have 378Mb of images on 
a 512Mb 40x Lexar compact flash card and I just did an experiment 
transferring it to my 500Mhz G4 Powerbook via the pcmcia slot - 4 mins 
5 secs. This is in fact how I normally work on location.

Something not right somewhere for you.
