I do wonder why listers don't use the archive. Do we not realise that there are so many on this list who are from outside the UK and to whom UK import procedures, ADSL suppliers etc, are just unwanted noise. Google provided at least one of the responses to the Looong Firewire question. Why not try Google before cluttering this list?
But to answer the original, topic - I spent 20 years in import/export. The tariffs are not set by the UK but are a worldwide GATT tariff. You may get some local differences in interpretation but it has nothing to do with Britain in particular. The treatment on investment by the inland revenue is an entirely different matter and is only relevant to the UK (ie - not the whole list!!), and has little to do with the object of this list as defined in the guidelines
And just to clarify. Duty is payable on the landed cost - ie including freight to the point of entry. Vat is PAYABLE on the landed cost (including duty). Unless you have a deferment account (which you won't if you aren't a regular importer) than you will have to pay the VAT on importation, though you can offset it as an input in your normal VAT return if registered. You will not get the Duty back.
I do hope that all long term listers, who know the regular questions, will try to refer newer members to the Archive, on such subjects .
