I'm afraid that <as much as it can be> is the right phrase, it's very
difficult to get a good colour range from a laptop, but some
calibration/profiling software and devices do it better than others.
Graybalance should be OK though, if you put up a mono file an it looks
mono you're fine.

Before spending any money, watch out for real monochrome in your files
using the eyedropper and info palette. I'm sure you realise that equal
RGB numbers = true monochrome?

A RIP is quite an investment. We are seeing great results in mono [and
in colour] from Ultrachrome machines with Proofmaster RIP, but I'd not
recommend spending RIP money and setting up on a 2100. This technology
becomes financially valid [read justifiable] on 4000 and up.

I made a <mono use> profile for a Jazz photographer with an 1160
recently (no RIP needed), I'm out on site but will be adding Howard's
comments to my feedback page later this week - at :

that could be metamerism, green in daylight and warm indoors?

there is a technology for making mono profiles for RGB printers like
yours, but you should be fine with a properly made printer profile made
for your own printer, I've seen very good results from Ultrachrome on
mono images. Remember that even mono inks suffer from metamerism (see
link from pixl email for more info on metamerism).
