Hi,
I'm wondering whether to buy a laptop or a portable storage unit to download cf
cards onto.
I'm going to be shooting raw on the 1ds mk2 with 2 x 2gb cards.
People I know with laptops don't tend to use them on location as they are a
pain and not much fun on the beach !
The SmartDisk FlashTrax looks a good compromise or may be the new Apple i pod.
Any suggestions?

I would go for the laptop for several reasons:
You can evaluate the pictures that that all is working well (even if you got to
put a black towel over your head and computer on the beach and look like a
really old-fashioned photographer).

I would hate to dump all my pictures into a small device, trust that they were
copied correctly and then erase the originals. If you are traveling, the
laptop can be used to burn CDs so you can separately keep backup copies and
even mail them back home if traveling.

Typically, with the right adapter, the laptop will be faster to copy the cards
then the little storage units.

I have a little audio/video player, Archos AV320 that I am using not to
download the CF to, but as a 20 GB backup for my laptop while traveling. It
has USB so it looks just like another drive to the computer so I can drag and
drop files quickly.
