What do you think of the various camera profiling softwares? I presume you have looked hard at them all.
I have looked hard at quite a few at least, including a few yet to be released.
My current favourite (consistant results and great flexibility) Is from GretagMacbeth. I don't like a set solution (just like few photographers could live with being dictated which film and lab they should use). Differnt horses for different courses...
Or do you do remote camera profiling as with printers?
No chance, too many variables and you need to be next to the camera to do proper testing/evaluation of the profile, adapt to your liking, redo profile retest etc.
It's a long process if you want to get it right. Remember you need to build profile(s) that will fit almost anything as well as establish a proper workflow for the photographer/publisher/museum in question.
I would be lying if I said I could do it in a day (although sometimes you get to where you want to be within hours). Frequently you struggle to get jus that last detail right that makes everything fall into place, and find it's not a global problem but rather observer metamerism with a particular colour. in other words what that colour falls into place something else tumbles out of order. Then you have a couple of tough decisions to make...
Proper camera profiling needs to be onsite (which I do frequently) and with patience.
