Nat,
I have been using a D70 for 6 months now. Search the Pro Dig archives for my
postings on it and from many others you 'll get the info you need. Very
breifly I brought the camera to test it in my workflow (Commercial /
Industrial/editorial and PR work.) before committing to a dearer camera. The
camera was +$2000 AUS, bits and pieces + new computer + new software etc etc
so far well over $8000 AUS. for a workable system. Be very sure of what you
need and how you plan to use it and make sure you have reserves for the
inevitable extras.
The 18-70 is quite good and worth buying with it, even if only as a backup
lens. The camera substantially exceeded my expectations and is now in
regular use (see my prior posts). It seems reasonably sturdy, far more so
than the 300D although not up to full pro standards for dings, dust and
moisture I suspect. If you want the best from it shoot RAW. You also need
the SB800/600 unless you are totally studio based. For candids and press
style work the PSAM exposure modes work very well.
Annoyances: No global custom settings that you can save and store, although
the menu system is logical and quick to navigate. No cable release, you need
the ML-3 remote. No sync lead socket, you need the AS-15 or use the pop up
flash at 1/16 power or SB800 at minimum with the head swivelled away from
subject (if you don't want catch lights or hotspots) to trigger studio
flashes. Nikon's i-TTL uses a series of preflashes to check exposure before
firing main burst which leads to probs triggering slaves unless you disable
it. It also makes a lot of people blink so you end up with a lot of closed
eyes. Use it on manual if its a major prob with some subjects.
Try before you buy!

Regards,
Frank Styevko from OZ
