A small wind generator costs about $500 and has to go on a 35' tower. We'd
have to get a variance to mount it. To be cost effective, we'd need an
average wind speed of about 6 mph. We get plenty of good breezes and gusts
going as high as 70 mph, but there just isn't enough steady-state wind
through here to make it worthwhile. The average is about 4 mph. So, it
doesn't quite do enough to put up with what's required to mount them and get
the variances. So we'll stick with just the solar.

As a novelty we might put one wind generator on the garage roof. But the
solar panels and the lightning rod will come first. :-)

Oh... Storing power is the most expensive part. Our RV has 22 golf cart
batteries. A storage system large enough to power a house is a really huge
expense, and so is the structure to store them in. I think I'd rather just
stick diesel in a tank and use a generator for blackouts. :-)

There's a limit to how green I'm going to go. First and foremost, I'm
practical. I'm no eco-nutball.
