Ah, I get ya.

Still, I don't have a dvd burner so that's that out of the question.

Bit on the large side! 6 CD's!

This could take a while.
Not sure, but the Suse Live USED to be on one CD. Look around a bit, maybe it still is.

OTOH, there are TONS of LiveCDs that do fit on one. Take a look at Knoppix, from Knoppix.org. (Get Version 4.02 instead of 5 - there was a screwup in the 5.0 release, and a lot of people, including myself, can't get it to network/internet) There is also Helix, Puppy, DamnSmallLinux, etc, etc, etc. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. None of them match Suse's Desktop, IMHO, but it will go a long way to teaching you the basics. With the liveCD, you put in the CD, boot up, and you're in linux. Shutdown, remove the CD, and you're in Windows. The only drawback is that since you're running compressed software off of a CD drive, it's quite a bit slower than it would be for a real install. Good enough to poke around with, though.

If you do decide to go with Suse, the Dual boot install is simple and fool proof. I've done it 4 times now, and never lost any Windows data. Of course, YMMV, etc, etc., but it's pretty rock solid.
