Anyone got any idea how to convert a colour PDF to a black & white one, are
there any tools out there that would do this job?
One of my clients has been scanning in documents on their big shiny Canon
scanner/printer/copier. Problem is the default format is PDF colour! I
have now changed that to 300x300 greyscale PDF (compact), a much more disk
space friendly format.
I'd suggest you not store in PDF, but that's another discussion.
To fix the existing colour PDFs, download one of the many free/cheap
PDF printer drivers, set it to print b&w output and automate Adobe
Acrobat reader to open the colour PDF and print to the B&W print
driver. I've used PDF995 (which costs USD 9.95, imagine that!) and it
can be sufficiently automated for my purposes. Bob Lee has a free
solution he's posted to the board on a number of occasions (see the
archives) and there are many more expensive solutions that may make it
even easier.
Time == Money, and you could probably do this all with GhostScript (or
on a Mac) at no cost but your own time.
Out of curiousity, how much storage is taken up by how many files, and
what's the cost savings with going to b&w?
