There's always the alternative of using open source SharpDevelop
(http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/) instead of VS, for WinForms
apps at any rate. You could use SQL Server Express for the database for
<10 users.
But you're right - VS2005 is heavily SQL Server-centric when it comes to
easy data layer stuff - you can certainly use other database backends
but you'll be doing a lot more hand-rolling of data layer.
I use Sharp Develop exclusively for developing C# apps, it is really a very nice IDE. I have also used the *MySQL Connector/Net* and it rocks.
