Dominic, I agree wholeheartedly. I have a very good friend who is Asian and Muslim, who came over the the UK 30 years ago and started a small business of which he is very proud. We have excellent discussions about Religion and Politics and he certainly doesn't take offence about other people disagreeing with his beliefs and/or faith.
I live near Burnley which is where my friend has his business and for those of you who don't know, the Burnley and Blackburn area has an extremely high percentage of muslim population. About 2 years ago now there was a lot of racial riots sparked off by a meeting of the right wing BNP (British National Party) and the equivalent on the Asian side - both in my opinion deserve each other. Unfortunately it is both extremes of our society who get all the media coverage, not the good living majority, When the racial bubble burst, which it undoubtedly will do at some time in the future in the UK if current policies of "stupid" political correctness are followed, the good law abiding Asian and Black community will be the first to have their shops and businesses fire-bombed and families attacked etc etc. whilst I can see the majority of tolerant "non racict" blacks AND whites just standing by and letting the violence happen as opposed to most people's first though to "wade in" and stop any violence and thuggery. This is very very sad, but in the words of my friend "destined to happen". Both he and I may well not agree with other peoples views but we will BOTH stand by their right to have these views, however distateful they may well be. The silent majority need to stand up in throughout the world and condem this stupid "Political Correctness" which is alienating normal good people and instead instigate some common sense. Remember, the stupid "politically correct" rules/decisions that are being made to fuel the racist's agenda and alienate minorities are not actually made up and instigated by the minorities themselves, they are made by my fallow protégé's in government who are the product of a 60's culture where "those who could, did...did" and those who couldn't went into teaching and government. If we are all not careful, the idealistic and unrealistic views of certain members of the "baby boomer (or should that be bummer)" society will come back and bite us on the arse. In my oppinion, I want Britain to stay the way I remember it in the 50's and 60's, as do I want France and Italy etc. to remain with a proper national identity. I hope to retire to Italy in about 10 years time and - yes I want to stay British - but encompass ALL the laws, customs and way of Italian life. The expression "When in Rome...." comes to mind. One of these "ways of life" in all civilised societies should be to stand up and stop the extremist elements at both ends of the spectrum from gaining support. If not, then I fear that I may well feel just like my friend does now...but in 10 years time and in Italy. Oh how I hope that I am wrong. If Muslims are really serious about being seen as a faith of peace and tolerance, it would greatly help their cause to take their lumps like everyone else. At the merest sniff of criticism, bang on cue, they burn effigies, burn buildings and have even resorted to murder (a nun was killed in one recent attack). I realise these are probably a minority, but they can be seen across the world in their thousands at these violent demonstrations. To the rest of the civilised world, they are perceived as a horde of intolerant savages. A phrase that I think they would do well to adhere to is this - No-one has the right NOT to be offended. In any democratic society, free speech is a fundamental right. A such, there are bound to be things that are said or done that will offend you. I am normally very mild mannered and tolerant, but my patience is stretching to breaking point with the attitude of a seemingly increasing number of Muslims.
