Working for some companies that wouldn't foot the bill for me to attend over the past 16 years, it is first cost and loosing an employee over the days of travel and conference. Cost is the airfare, lodging, meals and the conference cost itself. Second, you or your boss think you/they know it all and therefore you don't need to go to a conference. Third, because they are not part of an online community, they have no idea it was going on.
