My last employer (EDS) and I had worked out a deal where I paid for the
conference and they paid for my time off as "training" days so I didn't have
to take vacation to go to conferences. It is not ideal, but it got me out
the door. I did get them to pay for a couple of inexpensive local things,
but conferences that required travel and hotel were on my own nickel.

EDS just didn't have much of a training budget anymore when I was there. Now
that I'm back to independent status again, my conference budget it back at
its former level of importance, but certainly I don't have a lot of cash to
spare at the moment. We are still building our house!

I wasn't aware that you were independent again...when did you leave EDS? That was what...a 2-3 year run for you? Time flies...
