Ubuntu Linux is indeed renowned for those things. I got it to instantly recognize my PCMCIA wireless card on my creaky old Sony Vaio. I could remove that card and swap in a wired network card, and it would instantly switch between settings. I even tried that doing that during a file download, and it was able to make the switch and complete the download successfully. When traveling it would easily switch to the strongest signal.
When running Win2K on that machine, it would complain if I removed the card without first stopping the service. Even then, it wouldn't always recognize the new card I was inserting, and forget about even thinking about having the network signal be detected. Everything was manually set.
