I have "Dive Into Python" by Mark Pilgrim and it's an excellent book from getting you from 0 to 45mph.

I won't say 60 because there's just too much capability in Python and plug ins to really be able to say that you're an expert after one book.

Dive Into Python is also available online: <http:// www.diveintopython.org/>

I've also had two O'Reilly books recommended: _Learning Python_ and _Programming Python_. I haven't read either, as I tend not to be a book learner, but since this question comes up a lot on the Python lists, I know that others have benefitted from these.
