Geez - what a torrent o comments - Yee Haah !!
I got this thing I wrote in VFP , I call it a VFP Spyder. I have it
scanning the web looking for key terms. When something comes back about a
VFP GIG (billable time contract) or J-O-B (W2 employment) I post it here.
My posting schedule is erratic. I could automate it more, and probably
will in the next review cycle of the Spyder (what's an additional email
interface, anyway ? Easy Peasy to add in, already got the code)
The Spyder's been running for about 2.5 years now. I've been posting job
notices, gig notices, for about 4 years now here.
Now - GRANTED - the payscale for this Westchester County Gig is abysmal,
based on both the requirements of the slot AND the location. But I didn't
say anything, thinking that those looking in that area would know that
already.
It's even more interesting that it's through a IT services firm, not a
direct hire back at the client's site (but it COULD be a conversion after
some time).
You know the drill - if you are going through an IT Services Firm to find
employment, there is a fee involved, usually paid by the final employer
back to the IT Services Firm. You, the developer, never see any piece of
that. You, the developer, will suffer a loss of direct monies paid to
you, since the markup is already agreed upon even prior to the job posting
being made.
Other terms are 'recruitment company', 'IT Staffing firm' , 'Software
Consultancy' etc etc.
So I'll guess and say the markup for this gig to be between 40 to 80
percent. It makes sense for the IT Services Firm to keep that 'employee'
out on site for as long as possible - those markups pay others' salaries
(can't blame em) and infrastructure (office lease, nice letterhead, etc
etc) .
But - and here's the BUT -
You, as a VFP developer, can just see this as yet another stupid thing
coming across with low wages and having to go through a 3rd party.
Personally I think it erodes the viability of a skilled developer to make
a skilled developer's WAGE.

Michael - ya ya - I wasn't worried about posting the URL. The notice from
CL is (as someone else pointed out) to prevent other job-listing web sites
from doing an auto-suck into their own non-CL sites, in effect stealing
the content. I've posted jobs on CL for about 2 years now, and sometimes
say it's ok to post the job elsewhere, and then get about 3 times the
response if I had only posted it on CL. It's an option to click on when
one is making a job post. The default is 'NO' .

All n all, as a w-2 employee, if a wage is minimalistic, there better be
some serious benefits that are given gratis. Right ? This one gig has
company paid health insurance (as long as you are an employee of Axiom)
and thats a big deal. Employee-contributed health insurance sucks, I
always hated to go that route when I was an employee. Axiom also has
tuition-reimbursement (a big deal too) and has taken the standard approach
of wanting it's new hires to get some MS certs during their first year.
Most companies that do that offer the online web training for gratis, as
well (to be done whilst NOT on regular day time shift, of course).
---
and - my apologies for the original minimalistic post. I assumed nothing,
and only posted it cause thats what I do (remember?) . I could step it up
a few notches and try to be an employment agency, but who's got the time
for that ? (Actually, watch this space)
Warmest Regards [Bill]
