I update the Google Calendar, read xml from web services and get them ready for VFP to name a couple. Python was very easy to pick up after using VFP for so long. I can create a small .exe to do something and call it from VFP using the run command.
As Malcolm mentioned the Python standard library has almost everything you need - and if not, there is a library for it.
