I tried to install Ubuntu on a laptop recently.  It seems the folks at
Ubuntu have moved the graphics initialisation code from X into GRUB.
Didn't work with my graphics card (Intel model, 'fully supported'
apparently).

Gave up after trying numerious tweaks.

Debian worked fine (and is not much different to Ubuntu anyway).
