I think your SMTP server is the culprit. Is this an in-house server, or is it provided by a service provider? I would first guess that you have stumbled upon someone's latest skirmish in the never-ending battle with the dark side of email (spam or malware).
Try setting up a free Google account and use their SMTP servers...works great for me whether it's a cell phone, pad device, unattended server, or even my own email. The only drawback I can see is that, often, if people try to reply to the message (that was routed out through Google's SMTP) it will go back to the Google email account instead of to the reply address your mail client has specified.
