I encourage you to watch a few episodes of "Hoarding", which is a TV 
series, and you might understand better.  My wife hoards everything 
including lot of junk mixed in with some valuable stuff, food, house 
space, etc.  She can even suck the vary air out of a room and hoard it.  LOL

The Hoarder develops a strong relationship with their stuff that is more 
important than a relationship with their kids, husbands, and other 
family, so we do have an odd relationship, but one that is workable, if 
we respect each others idiosyncrasies, try not to be to judgemental, 
give each other plenty of space without trying to control, and we do 
care about each other.  Living with a hoarder is better than living 
alone, at least up to a point.  The alternative is loneliness.
