We keep a land line, but got rid of the fax line eons ago. We keep it for one reason, really: my wife. She is a total Luddite (well, at least I got her to stop *printing* web pages to show me). OTOH, there is still nothing like the quality of a land line: no fuzz, no dropped calls, no mysterious "un-calls."
We converted the land line to "measured service" with no caller ID, no voice mail, nothing. Got a cheap answering machine (which is far better than the expensive ones of yore). We get some number of minutes included and pay a marginal amount beyond that. Pretty cheap.
