Antenna strength, most likely. I had an older Linksys router that didn't get
to all parts of my house, so I bought an 18 db antenna from radiolabs.com
and the problems went away.

I have wood lath and plaster walls and the wifi is great throughout. The
single AP is in one of the corner bedrooms and the opposite corner gets
great signal. I wonder what the difference is?
