Hi John When you get the pst. Outlook 2010 Click File then Open then Open Outlook Data File and navigate to where you have saved the old pst. This will open under your inbox as another personal folder. You can then either, delete the unwanted stuff, remove it from the list and then import into the new pst or, Click File Then Options then advanced. Under export click export. In the Import and export Wizard click export to file then next. Under create a file of type select your choice and then click next then select a folder to export from. The contacts in the old personal folder the next. Under Save exported file as, click Browse, select a destination folder, and in the File name box, type a name for the file. Click OK In the Export to a File dialog box, click Next. Click Finish the use the File, Open, import function to bring your contacts in.

The situation is not quite what I first said, I tried to keep it simple in the hopes that someone on this list would have had a similar experience and come across the solution. The full story is that a friend has an old machine running Outlook 2000 (I think, it may be 2003) which has frozen on him, probably due to the excessive number of jokes he insists on hoarding. He has replaced it with a new machine and Outlook 2010 and wants to start again by copying just the contacts across; he asked me how to do it so I explored Outlook 2010 - I like to export my contacts at intervals as a backup so this would be a good opportunity to learn how to do it in 2010. This was when I hit the error message! I'll get him to copy the .pst file across to see if that will transfer his contacts but it still leaves me with the problem of exporting from Outlook 2010, I'll investigate Thunderbird. Will the iPhone synch with Thunderbird as easily as it does with Outlook?
