I like ASUS AMD motherboards with the M3+ socket, which seem to provide
the best value for the money. You should try and find the latest ASUS
motherboard in the price range and feature set you need. I would go
ahead and max out the boards memory, eg 32 megs if possible, if I could
spare the money; because, memory is cheap right now, and it's a drag to
upgrade memory later.

I like the WD RE4 hard drives. They are enterprise class equipment with
extensive burn in before being sold. The drives are very fast and
reliable. They have two cpus in the hard drive and are self correcting
for problems like vibration when out of alignment. I could only find WD
RE4 drives in 3mbs, so check to see if you can find it the 6mbs
specification. Perhaps this has something to do with the RE4 warranty,
whereby 3mbs drives can be expected be more reliable, thus last longer.
Also remember that access time and transfer rates are two different
things, and the WD RE4 has very good access times.

The xfs file system is very fast; although, ext4 without journaling is
not far being.
