It's not clearly part of the article when you are reading it on your phone. I
had already looked up the answer but it doesn't matter what Lincoln' party is
in comparison to today as that has no relevance. I wondered about recent
history and found just what I expected. That is another worthless endorsement
that is meaningless.
The article had a lot of worth and meaning for me. LOL BTW, I should
have said _abolition of slavery_, (eg doing away with something by law).

The question you asked is clearly part of the article, so it seems the question you asked
was making a point and requiring no answer. LOL Look just under the Picture of Abraham
Lincoln, and click on the caption, "New York Times Endorsements Through the
Ages". This link will take you all the way back to the NY Times first endorsement
of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.
The Republican party of Abraham Lincoln is the Democratic party of today, ( eg
the abolism of slavery was a very progressive idea in Lincoln's day).

The link below is to a good article why the NY Times is endorsing President
Obama for a second term:

Excerpt:
For these and many other reasons, we enthusiastically endorse President Barack
Obama for a second term, and express the hope that his victory will be
accompanied by a new Congress willing to work for policies that Americans need.
