We do realize that war is still going on, that there is a good likelihood it will get bigger (the attitude behind it is out of the bottle and in control of the military they've been building for years for this purpose), that it's already cost us monumentally (even if it stopped tomorrow, we're each holding a $28,000 future-tax bag just for the cost to date), that our borders and society are open and we've been vulnerable all along, there are very real wmd's out there unaccounted for, and we have a large number of enemies who want to teach us a lesson about invading their piece of the world?
Added up, we're way down the road into a stinky situation that can get worse overnight. We have madmen and fanatics at the helm, and they are betting our future on their failure-ridden crusade. You'd think they would acknowledge defeat and walk away shamed? No! They will stone-wall, lie, puff and do whatever it takes to turn their loss around. Because in their minds it can and must be turned around. But it can't be turned around. Any student of history knows that those people will always repel a foreign invader. The infighting we've enabled is real, but it's also being used as a smokescreen to mask the fact that the overwhelming majority of Iraqi's - and Muslims in general - want us out of there, and will not accept anything less. Our neocons, on the other hand, are profiting wildly from everything that happens over there, and the pro-Israel loyalists among them aren't about to accept playing second fiddle to Muslim interests, thus the immovable object meets the irresistible force - with us in the middle, paying for it with blood and money. I see a way out of this: bring the neocons to trial for what they've done, and use the trial to show the Muslim world that we are capable of self-correction, and apologizing for what they've done to them. I would sentence the neocon gang to spend the rest of their days visiting the families of every person they've killed or maimed with their crusade, and I would let the UN decide what's to happen with Israel. I'd also prepare for another attack. I'd do it by, the next time Congress goes out of session, telling them to stay home and use modern communications capabilities to run the gov't from the States they live in - and should be spending their time in anyway.
