When you hear the term "web service" think of one computer talking to
another computer and exchanging structured information.
In my case, I do a lot of work with (ground) shipping companies. We
have our computer ask another computer "How much does it cost to ship
this *thing* from this warehouse to this destination zip code, and that
it is on *X* pallets and weighs *Y* hundreds of pounds and it needs
inside delivery." Their computer calculates the shipping costs, and how
many trucks are needed based on our account discount and the parameters
passed.
Our computer talks to about 5 different web services like this and we
"shop" for the best price in real time. Good web services respond in
under a second. FedEx responds in about 4 seconds. :(
