SSL is the norm if you want any security but it does ultimately depend on the pop2 server and what it supports.

Yeah, I'm beginning to get that impression.

The idea that anybody would care about "security" when using free data-mined email services amuses me. And IMO the belief that "hackers" are everywhere, intercepting unencrypted emails as they are transmitted and using them for nefarious purposes, is false. There are a lot easier ways to steal useful data. (Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.)
