This could have easily have turned out in a digital 9/11 a few times over.

I am absolutely opposed to any effort by the US government to eavesdrop on email, or any other communications, without a warrant, issued by an independent (and PUBLIC) court, which is directed at specific communicators based on reliable evidence that those specific communicators are involved in a crime.

That being said, I don't understand "digital 9/11'" in this context. It appears that what the media called a "virus" was in fact a targeted eavesdropping mechanism that didn't damage software or equipment, but stole information.
