Frank: No data environment on any report. No functions in the reports. Only fields form the cursor. It is the correct alias() on the report. Thanks for the suggestions. Jack

Maybe you have a table/cursor in the DE of the report? Maybe some function in the report is selecting a different work area? Try deleting all the fields on the report and add one in with ALIAS() so you'll find out what the alias is that the report is running on. If it is the correct alias, then you can start adding back in batches of controls from your backup copy of the report and see which one starts the problem happening again. Frank.
