Hi to all my old comrades,

I'm considering a MacBook Air or Pro and looking for some advice. My
use case these days is software design, project management, with
limited Python, HTML5/CSS3 development. Ideally I would like to run a
small Linux and/or Windows VM on my machine when needed. I move around
a lot during the day - from meeting to meeting so portability and
battery life are important. I'm currently using an old Sony laptop with
Win 7 Pro, 4 Gb RAM, and a 320 Gb hard drive.

I'm biased to the Air because of the weight, but wondering if I'm going
to regret not sucking it up and buying a slightly heavier/larger
MacBook Pro with more RAM and a larger display?

My questions relative to the Apple world and my use case:

1. Memory: 8 or 16 Gb of RAM? I think the latter forces my hand on the
MacBook Pro vs. Air? I'm thinking 8 Gb min in order to run the
occasional VM.

2. CPU: i5 or i7: For my use case am I really going to benefit from an
i7 upgrade?

3. VM software: Parallels, VMware, other? Ideally I would like to
virtualize my existing Win 7 environment and have it available on a
limited use basis.

4. Text editor: TextMate, BBBedit, open source EMACS or VI, other?

5. Carrying case and mouse recommendations?

6. Anything else?

Thanks!
Malcolm
