Get one you won't regret it. Because of the "hard wired" memory, the older ones are now at a premium. The old models (pre 2013) are probably better value as you can upgrade them. I put in 16Gb in my 2012 model and it has transformed it and now I can easily run 3 or 4 VM's with no problems.
Certainly 16Gb is the least I would go for and my next upgrade will be a SSD for the primary boot which is fast anyhow (and lightning compared with windows). Funnily enough I upgraded (currently 10.9 Mountain Lion) to the latest OS Mavericks on Friday and found: 1. Performance stinks when compared with the old system 2. Quite a lot of software just doesn't work 3. The easy use of the gestures to load/run the launchpad is painfully slow and in fact unuseable So, quick restore back from Timemachine backup last night (Well I say quick, but it was about 3 hours) and the Macbook is back to running at optimum speed. I Googled the problems and other people are having them on older models so I think that a wait until the maintenance release comes is in order. I'm leaning towards the MacBook Pro 13" Retina with 8 Gb RAM/512 Gb unless someone has a compelling argument for another config.
