Malcolm,
1. The Magic Mouse is a good offering if you like mice but I would definitely
go for the Apple Magic Trackpad. I have both but rarely if ever use the mouse.
Once you use the Magic Trackpad and/or the standard Apple touchpad you never
want to go back to a mouse. Also the external keyboard that goes with the Magic
Trackpad is great.

2. As I said earlier 16Gb definitely.

3. Vmware Fusion V6 - definitely streets ahead of Parallels at the moment even
though they do leapfrog each other. VMWare have Windows 8.(1) emulation down to
a fine art and you can seamlessly merge it into OSX using "Unity" which is in
the product.

4.

Subject: [NF] Considering a MacBook Air or Pro - looking for advice

Hi to all my old comrades,

I'm considering a MacBook Air or Pro and looking for some advice. My use case
these days is software design, project management, with limited Python,
HTML5/CSS3 development. Ideally I would like to run a small Linux and/or
Windows VM on my machine when needed. I move around a lot during the day - from
meeting to meeting so portability and battery life are important. I'm currently
using an old Sony laptop with Win 7 Pro, 4 Gb RAM, and a 320 Gb hard drive.

I'm biased to the Air because of the weight, but wondering if I'm going to
regret not sucking it up and buying a slightly heavier/larger MacBook Pro with
more RAM and a larger display?

My questions relative to the Apple world and my use case:

1. Memory: 8 or 16 Gb of RAM? I think the latter forces my hand on the MacBook
Pro vs. Air? I'm thinking 8 Gb min in order to run the occasional VM.

2. CPU: i5 or i7: For my use case am I really going to benefit from an
i7 upgrade?

3. VM software: Parallels, VMware, other? Ideally I would like to virtualize my
existing Win 7 environment and have it available on a limited use basis.

4. Text editor: TextMate, BBBedit, open source EMACS or VI, other?

5. Carrying case and mouse recommendations?

6. Anything else?

Thanks!
Malcolm
