I do not understand why anyone would consider localized mail client over a
web based one. Being able to log into your account anywhere and not need a
client seems to be expected. Being able to search you entire account for a
specific message anywhere and on any device just makes sense.
These are work-based accounts, not personal accounts. Most of our employees
do not travel as part of their work. Those who do have laptops, on which
fat email clients are installed for access to email. In cases where the
person needs access to the same account on multiple devices, the client is
configured to leave messages on the server after downloading, for a
reasonable period of time. Once downloaded to a fat client, messages can be
accessed much more quickly and flexibly than from any webmail I've ever
experienced. Therefore there is no need to sacrifice speed, reliability, or
flexibility for mobility in our case.
One size does not fit all.
