You are not alone. I've had several customers who were determined to move
their app to "The Cloud," although they hadn't a clue what that meant.

In one case, a client had their internal file server, SBS server, and
domain controllers moved to a hosting facility 80 miles from their office,
and converted into hosted, virtualized machines, with the assurance that
"everything would be fine" from their "computer guys." Of course, you can't
practically share DBFs over the 'Net in such an arrangement (they had a VPN
set up). It didn't take long to discover that sluggish data entry forms
were nothing compared to massive slowdowns for reports and bulk processing.

As they'd already had a remote solution in place for their sales force,
they chose to set everyone else up that way as well, so they are
essentially all remoting into what used to be their LAN. It's a tremendous
waste of resources and bandwidth and, I suspect, money as well.

So, make sure you have a clear understanding with the client on what they
think they want to do.
