FWIW, 8.1 has a new Navigation tab on the taskbar properties that will let you set it to boot directly into desktop. And the start button at least gives you a fighting chance to find your programs.
I wish they'd stopped at the Windows 7 interface, and simply added the windows 8 speed improvemnts, though.
