I just tried opening a .docx file in OOO (v3) and it was fine (even showed inserted comments) - maybe because I have the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack installed?

I use it on Office 97 on Win XP, where it works. I tested it with Office 2003 on Win 2000 and XP, and it did not work. Perhaps it has some additional dependencies that I wasn't aware of.
