I just tried opening a .docx file in OOO (v3) and it was fine (even showed inserted comments) - maybe because I have the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack installed?

It opens them. But it won't handle complex formatting. A very simple example: A one-page letter laid out in MS Word with a letterhead consisting of two identical images, one on the left margin, one on the right margin, with text between them, displays in OO with the two images stacked on top of each other under the text.

A more typical example that we have to deal with frequently: Word tables in OO show up with their row and column heights messed up beyond recognition.
