I was not really advocating mix and match, start with one and that's it. But
it seems not to matter if thats SQL free or Maria.
And yes its data storage. I have not even gone T-SQL.

Depends how you do your app...do you treat the backend as just data storage
and do most code in the app?  Then yeah, any backend should suffice.  If you
write T-SQL or other RDBMS-specific code, you can't just mix and match.
