I had an earlier version of Photoshop Elements that I hadn't used for a few years. Tried to install it on Win 7, and it said that it was not compatible with this version of the OS.(Not sure how the old pgm figured out what it couldn't run with in the future?)

It looked at the OS version and if that was greater than the latest version that it was designed for / tested with, your program bailed. It might work just fine, but the programmers could not have known that and played it safe (or were going for a forced upgrade).
