Microsoft's Media Player, in addition to being a great delivery
platform for malware and exploits. also has no problem installing
proprietary and restrictive codecs on your machine. It's easier for
the software vendor when they have the attitude that they own your
machine.

I don't know the specifics of what you were trying to install on what
type of hardware and OS, There are a lot of media players in Linux to
choose from, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. In addition,
different distributions take different stances on how easy or hard it
ought to be to install commercial codecs which can taint the platform
you're using. I found it was sometimes hard to find instructions on
how to install such restrictive software.

If you decide to try that one again, don't forget the Linux zealots
here and on the ProLinux forums.
