The icons appear but the dos app does not take any of them. I still get
the blank rectangular icon

In theory - even though its a DOS app - you should still be able to use Windows
Icons. Maybe look for folders on your system with Icons (.ico ???) - then go to
that folder via the Properties option as you mentioned - and they should
appear. No?
